Meet the Maker: Seven Sundays

I had been introduced to granola in its many forms, but when we headed on our honeymoon I had never heard of muesli. When we sat down to our first breakfast in New Zealand and were served a delicious bowl of yogurt, fruit, and a mixture of oats, nuts and dried fruit we were officially introduced . . . and in love with muesli.

When we came home to Minnesota in 2009 there was no muesli to be found. At the time I was making homemade granola every few weeks, but making homemade muesli never even crossed my mind.

Thankfully it did come to mind for another Minnesota visitor to New Zealand though. Like us, Hannah and her new husband came across muesli during their honeymoon and came home to Minnesota and started making delicious artisan muesli in their home kitchen. That farmer’s market batch has grown into a muesli loving community spread across the country.

So what is muesli?

Traditionally made of oats, fruit, and nuts it got its start in the early 1900s as part of the movement towards healthier living. Based on a dish popular in Switzerland it spread around Europe, but never went fully mainstream like granola or cereal. However, it has seen a bit of a resurgence as a high fiber, low sugar option.

It also helps that people like Hannah and the crew at Seven Sundays are making modern muesli with updated flavors. Think wild blueberry chia (my personal favorite) and cinnamon currant.

How do you eat muesli?

There are so many ways you can enjoy this delightful mix. A lot of people eat it plain with milk similar to a bowl of cereal. Or like we had it in New Zealand atop yogurt with fresh fruit and a drizzle of honey. It is also fantastic warmed up and served like oatmeal. We’ve also enjoyed it atop vanilla ice cream with a drizzle of honey or chocolate.

Our favorite way is known as bircher style and the most traditional way to enjoy it. Think overnight oats, but with muesli.

The next time you are in the grocery store check out the granola or cereal aisle for some Seven Sundays muesli and get a little taste of the lifestyle. The comfy Sunday feels every day of the week.
