5 Aphrodisiac Inspired Trips for Food Lovers

Food and love have always been tightly tied to each other. From Greek mythology to expensive date nights you can’t escape our love of food and how we love to share great food with those most important to us. Here are five recipes and trips to keep the love alive (and tasty) this Valentine’s Day and all year round.

Pomegranates

Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, planted the first pomegranate tree. Since then the fruit has symbolized fertility and abundance and makes a special gift for a lover. Besides, these ruby-colored fruits are just plain gorgeous.
Where to go: Egypt

Pomegranates have been valued in Egypt for centuries as a symbol of prosperity and ambition. They were even part of the required supply in a Pharaoh’s residence. Egyptian cuisine may not be as well recognized as other cuisines of the region, but it is home to a vibrant culinary culture mixing flavors of the Middle East and the Mediterranean. A visit here wouldn’t be complete without a trip through antiquities, but you can also take a culinary adventure that gives you a deeper insight into how food has shaped life in Egypt.

Chili Peppers

A classic aphrodisiac that quickens that pulse it has stories connected to it across Latin America. Mexican lore tells of Montezuma enjoying the spicy peppers as part of a hot chocolate concoction before visiting his harem.
Where to go: Mexico
Mexican chilies
Chilies are used in cuisines across the globe, but being in the US the first destination that comes to mind is obviously Mexico. And there is so much to explore in this often oversimplified nation. It isn’t just spring break and all-inclusive resorts. Consider heading to Mexico City to experience the culinary scene that is helping put bring well-deserved attention to traditional cooking, or head to the Yucatan to learn how to make some sweeter dishes featuring achiote, or fly to Oaxaca for some spicier dishes and thick rich mole sauce. The people I’ve met here have been so friendly and open to sharing their culture and food and it is a truly special experience.

Honey

Hippocrates prescribed it as a sexual stimulant and today we use it is a term of endearment. Many cultures view honey as a sign of good luck and sweetness flowing into your life.
Where to go: Greece
Greek coast
Greece is a beautiful country for lovers and a delicious place for foodies. Whether you’re exploring Athens or enjoying the views from an island, local food permeates daily life. Cooking courses are offered nearly everywhere and honey dishes are often the sweet ending to a day in the kitchen. Discover how to make honey and spice cookies (melomakarona), greek honey puffs (loukomades), or classic baklava. These easy dishes are perfect for recreating for your loved ones at home.

Strawberries

Ancient Romans associated strawberries with Venus, the goddess of love and in French culture they use to be given to newlyweds for good luck in fertility.

French strawberry tart
France is a food lovers paradise and strawberry season is pure heaven. Lyon is a great place to grab a pastry bag and get in the kitchen to discover a few secrets behind what makes French pastry so irresistible. Whip up a fresh strawberry tart, layer a stunning fraisier, and learn to shop a market like a French pro. Of course, after all that cooking, treat yourself to a winery visit or two.

Figs

In ancient Greece figs were sacred and a symbol of fertility and love. They are becoming a revered treat again with more chefs discovering their sweet delicate flavor.

Tuscany is a gorgeous region packed with friendly locals, great wine, phenomenal views, and of course fantastic food. Not far from Florence you find the city of Carmignano which is home to famous dried figs and a good place to get a taste for this delicate fruit. Italy is packed with cooking classes, top-notch restaurants, and locals willing to share their love of eating so you won’t want for good conversation and a few lessons.

Whatever your plans for Valentine’s Day I hope it is filled with adventure and tasty eats with your favorite people.
